HOMECorp: $5,000 to expand the HOMECorp’s counseling initiative targeted toward low, moderate and middle-income prospective first-time homebuyers, tenants, and local property owners as well as homeowners facing foreclosure.

St James Social Service Corporation: $5,000 for the Home Health Aide Certification Program to provide individuals with free training for employment in the home health care sector

Montclair Free Public Library: $5,000 to sort and catalogue former YWCA Montclair/North Essex archives transferred to the Library with copyright in 2003 for future use by scholars and the public.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair: $3,000 for an educational workshop to help youth participants analyze ways that their identities and perceptions of race and gender have formed and been supported by images in the mass media and popular culture.

First Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Montclair: $3,000 to use the Survival Skills for Youth © research-based curriculum to train fifteen adolescent women and men in self-management, personal car maintenance, housing options and appropriate employment behaviors.

Community Family Enrichment Services Center of the Oranges: $2,000 to the Youth Academy to match funding to use the research-based Survival Skills for Youth Curriculum © to train 15 high school aged teens identified as returning to HS or at-risk of dropping out in a range of life management skills.

Montclair Art Museum: $7,600 to fund Youth Selects, an independent study program created in 2004, offers two arts-interested, high school-aged artists the opportunity to learn about museum professions by working alongside museum staff to curate an exhibition to premiere in the Children’s Art Arcade in spring 2010.

Union Congregation Church: $4,000 to support The Side Door, an after school place where trained volunteers, including parents, engage middle school students in activities that help them to become the best they can be, take responsibility for their own actions, and have meaningful connections with their peers, parents, teachers and other significant adults.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Montclair Alumnae with The Delta Torch Fund, Inc.: $5,000 to the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, a national Delta Sigma Theta program focused on enrichment in mathematics, science and technology for young women of color, ages of 11 and 14, to improve their knowledge of and stimulate their interest in mathematics, science and technology, as well as expose them to everyday applications and careers in these fields.

Family Service League: $3,000 to recruit, train and retain 25 volunteers for the Essex County Rape Care Center.

Montclair Counseling Center: $7,000 for mental/emotional health support groups, to help girls at Montclair High and Glenfield Middle Schools cope with issues related to body image, manipulative media messages and healthy lifestyle choices. MCC’s licensed clinical psychologists conduct these sessions and communicate with the teachers, nurses, guidance personnel, and parents.

Partners for Women and Justice: $5,000 to support Partners’ financial literacy program, mPower (t), designed to provide low and moderate-income women with financial management and planning tools that will assist them in achieving financial stability and independence.

Jewish Family Services of MetroWest: $5,000 to expand Rachel’s Court Advocate Program that assists battered women who are plaintiffs when they are in the court ante-room waiting, usually many hours, to obtain restraining orders. The 2009 award includes funds to provide a babysitter, diapers and other necessities for the young children who have accompanied their mothers to court.

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, Township of Montclair: $2,000 to honor the Fund’s 10th Anniversary with a grant award by supporting toward the Fund’s professional fees for 2009 annual audit and tax filings.

Montclair Community Pre-K: $4,000 to offer educational support and resources to the caregivers of young children, including FNC’s weekly e-newsletter, “Whine and Dine” lecture/dinner programs, the Pajama Club and counseling services provided by the Family Service League.

National Council of Jewish Women – Essex: $2,500 for the Back to School Store, which provides 250 children from pre-qualified families, with new outfits of clothing and backpacks with recommended school supplies, personal care items and a book. A professional personal shopper assists the children. NCJW will hold the 2009 Back to School Store on August 2.

WISE Women’s Center – Essex County College: $5,000 to support the WISE Women’s Safe Haven, a “safe haven” on campus for women who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or women who are in re-entry from incarceration to learn new life coping skills while they improve their education and job skills. Partner organizations for this project are the Female Offender Re-Entry Group Effort (FORGE) funded by the Nicholson Foundation and the Urban Women’s Program funded by the NJ Division on Women.

2008 Grant Awards

Delta Research & Education Foundation: $3,000 to the Dr. Betty Shabazz Academy to engage young women of color in math, science and technology workshops and career mentoring, with parental involvement required.

Montclair Counseling Center: $5,000 for professionally lead support groups focused on personal development and health topics for girls attending Glenfield Middle and Montclair High School.

Montclair Community Pre-K: $3,000 to support the Family Network Center which provides parenting skills workshops and conferences for community parents and guardians of preschool age children.

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence: $3,500 scholarship funding for travel, lodging and robot parts to promote diverse participation in the All-female Robotics Team 1929 at Montclair High School

Montclair Counseling Center: $3,000 to continue emotional health groups for girls at Montclair High School identified by school personnel as needing support to succeed in school.

Montclair Community Pre-K: $3,000 for the Family Network Center provides educational and support resources to caregivers of young children through expert-facilitated programs on issues relating to parenting.

The Rachel Coalition: $3,000 for the renewal of funding to support The Rachel Coalition’s extensive range of services to victims of domestic violence.

Union Congregational Church: $3,000 for the Side Door for Friday after-school program to engage middle school students in informal learning projects, recreation, and positive relationships with their peers, parents, teachers and other significant adults.

Unitarian Church of Montclair: $3,000 for the Undoing Racism program which seeks to understand, challenge and act to dismantle systemic, institutional, and cultural racism through educational programs. This grant is to support workshops for local youths.

2006 Grant Awards

Montclair Community Pre-K: $3,000 to support parenting education workshops and conferences facilitated by experts; workshops and conference are open to all area residents.

Girls Incorporated of Northern New Jersey: $2,500 toward the “This is My Space” workshop on how to respond to sexual harassment and bullying, for girls ages 9 to 18 years old and their mothers.

Montclair Counseling Center: $3,000 partial support for groups to help female high school students to address personal development challenges that interfere with academic achievement.

HOMECorp: $3,000 to support education and counseling for female low, moderate and middle-income first-time homebuyers, tenants, and local property owners.

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence: $4,100 – $2,000 to the girls’ robotics team at Montclair High School and $2,100 to three of MFEE’s Turner Social Problem-Solving Fund programs.

Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley Red Cross – MFW Community Heritage Grant: $3,000 toward a new car to transport low and moderate-income elderly residents to medical appointments; last year Red Cross volunteers drove residents on 8,400 trips.

National Council of Negro Women – Montclair Section: $3,000 to bring the NCNW Black Women’s Health Imperative to the Montclair area.

Partners for Women & Justice: $3,000 to support a second year of M-Power financial literacy workshops for low-moderate-income women making life transitions due to domestic abuse and/or divorce.

The Rachel Coalition: $3,000 to train volunteers to provide battered women plaintiffs in the waiting area at the Essex County Family Court with support and information on community resources.

2005 Grant Awards

Competitive Grants

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Xi Omega Chapter: $2,025 to support mandatory enrollment in their financial literacy workshop for AKA college scholarship recipients and college members; to send financial care packages to students in the fall and for an intergenerational field trip for senior citizens and students. The 2004 workshop funded by MFW received a Merrill Lynch Award for Outstanding Youth Program.

Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties: $3,000 to support MoneyPower financial literacy program for 150 girls, ages 6-13 and training for 30 adult volunteer leaders, including resource boxes with The One and Only Common Cents Series materials.

National Council of Negro Women, Inc-Montclair Section: $3,000 to support financial literacy workshop series, one for young adult women of color, and one for senior-aged women in the Section’s Grandparent Support program. The first workshop series, funded by MFW for 2004, was attended by more than 75 women.

Montclair Counseling Center: $2,500 to increase professional and expert volunteers in the pilot/model Outreach program of support groups for Montclair High School girls addressing personal and family challenges that threaten their academic performance and economic future. Most students in the group are African-American from low-moderate-income families.

Montclair Economic Development Corporation: $3,000 to support staff and materials for the Montclair South project intended to bring the revitalization of the town’s South End business district in the Fourth Ward, on par with revitalization projects in the town’s other business districts

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence: $3,000 to support the IMANI College Lab (major grant from BestFoods, Inc.) and 2005 “ Who Will You be in the 21 st Century? ” the annual career conference for middle and high school students

Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc.: $2,500 emergency grant to keep the NESF Summer Camp for homeless children open for the first two weeks in August.

Partners for Women and Justice, Inc.: $3000 to launch a financial literacy pilot program for moderate-middle-income women and Partners’ low-income legal services clients.

The Rachel Coalition: $3,000 to work with Partners for Women & Justice to recruit and train 20-30 attorneys and paralegals trained in domestic violence representation for low-income women. IOLTA Fund and Laurie Foundation are lead funders for the effort.

YWCA of Eastern Union County: A one-time award of $2,300 to purchase new furnishings for one efficiency apartment in the new Transitional Housing facility for female victims of domestic violence, with their children. The shelter, a renovated Victorian house in a discrete location, will be opened in 2006. Women from Essex and Union Counties will be served.

Memorial Grants

Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund: $2,250 for the Hortense Ridley Tate Memorial Grant to support college scholarships for Montclair High School graduates, with preference to qualified women of color, planning to study economics, finance or related college majors. Recipients were publicly announced and are file with the Township MLK Fund.

Unitarian Church of Montclair: $2,500 for the Emily H. Kennedy Memorial Grant to support the Undoing Racism Committee and the annual national model course that helps citizens understand and combat systemic racism. Emily H. Kennedy was a lifelong member of the YWCA who graduated from the Undoing Racism three times. She voted in favor of the transition to MFW only weeks before her death.

Partners for Women and Justice: $500 for the Author Kinoy Memorial Grant to help the Partners to meet two Donors’ Matching Gift challenges totaling $50,000. MFW’s unrestricted grant will be applied for general expenses and planning.

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence: $4,000 for the Marie Tafaro Memorial Grant to support the new Arts Initiative for Montclair Public Schools. This grant was made from the funds left from the YWCA’s discontinued Tafaro Arts Scholarship program.

The Neighborhood Council, Inc: $2,500 for the George and Marian Waples Memorial Grant to the Neighborhood Council, Inc. for strategic planning to resolve fiscal challenges confronting this historic organization that founded and continues both the only credit union in the poorest section of Montclair’s predominately black Fourth Ward community the oldest daycare center serving low-income working-poor parents from the same community.

Trinity Presbyterian Student Aid: $300 for the Emoral Rudd Memorial Grant to support the Trinity Student Aid Fund scholarships for needy minority students attending college. Grant in lieu of flowers at the request of the church family for Emma’s memorial service.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Montclair Chapter: $3,000 to provide financial literacy workshops and tool kits to participants in the AKA Scholarship Mentoring Program.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Montclair Chapter: $3,000 to support the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, a program for minority girls, ages 11-14, to augment their scholarship in math, science and technology. Grant will support fundraising for the program.

Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson: $3,000 to support Cents Ability, financial literacy training for 200 girls ages 12 to 15 years old.

Interfaith Hospitality Network – Homeless of Essex County: $3,000 to provide two self-paced financial literacy workshops to homeless families with children.

Montclair Economic Development Corporation: $3,000 to support a portion of the costs for MEDC’s seminars for small business owners, 50% of whom are women.

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence: $3,000 to support a public school career seminar and a life management skills training project.

National Council of Jewish Women, Essex County Section: $3,000 for “Don’t Leave It At the Mall. Student’s Financial Survival” financial literacy workshop for girls, 13-18 years of age.

National Council of Negro Women, Inc.: $3,000 to support two financial literacy workshops for women of color facing mid-life decisions.

The Rachel Coalition: $3,000 for this coalition of ten organizations to offer seminars on financial independence to victims of domestic violence.

Memorial Grants

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund:  $2250 for the Hortense Ridley Tate Memorial Grant – to support college scholarships for MHS graduates planning to major in fields related to economics or finance.

Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence: $4000 for the Marie Tafaro Memorial Grant – to support public school arts education projects.

Partners for Women and Justice: for the Arthor Kinoy Memorial Grant – to support legal services for women in financially challenging life transitions; $500 to help meet a matching challenge grant.

The Neighborhood Council, Inc.: $2500 grant in memory of George and Marian Waples to support one of Montclair ‘s oldest models of philanthropy in the historically black Ward Four Community. Founded in 1926 by The Montclair Junior League, the Council has provided a home for over 19 community organizations, a credit union and many other community activities.

Unitarian Church of Montclair: $2500 for the The Emily H.Kennedy Memorial Grant – to support “Undoing Racism”- the model workshop that helps local citizens to understand and combat system racism.
